RE: Bennett J. Cohen Animal Stewardship Award Nomination

I wish to bring to your attention a new Award that AALAS will be presenting for the first time in 2002. The Bennet J. Cohen Animal Stewardship Award will be presented to an individual or individuals, organization, or institution who have made an extraordinary effort toward advancement of methods that replace or reduce the number of animals used in research, teaching or testing, or for development of programs or procedures that elevate the comfort and well-being of such animals.

Our professional community is richly endowed with those who hold to the principles of proper and humane animal care. I encourage you to identify someone or some organization/institution who is deserving of this distinguished honor and to submit a nomination on their behalf.

To nominate, one should submit a letter of nomination, additional supporting letters of nomination (no fewer than four, nor more than ten) to the Awards Selection Committee, c/o the National AALAS office, no later than May 1, 2002. Nomination letters should describe in detail the specific contributions and how these efforts have elevated the comfort and well-being of animals, or how they have resulted in reduced numbers of animals used. If individuals are being nominated, the curriculum vitae of such individuals should also be submitted at the same time as the nomination and supporting letters for that individual.
